Apply for a personal firearm license
Private individuals can use this service to apply for a personal firearm license.
To apply for a private firearm license:
- first check if you meet the eligibilty criteria
- prepare:
- a health declaration signed by your family doctor
- certificate or confirmation of military service, national civic service or exemption from service
- documents supporting the chosen eligibility criteria for receiving a firearm license
- complete the online application
You’ll get a confirmation text within a few days and a text to book an interview at a licensing office
- go to your interview
If you pass the interview you’ll get approval to continue
- pay the licensing fee online or at a post office
- buy a firearm and go to mandatory training at a shooting range
Once you have completed the training, you’ll get a magnetic license
Details about the application process
- You should check if you are eligible for a license before applying
- Apply online. You’ll need to attach:
- a health declaration signed by a family doctor
- a copy of your ID card and appendix
- a certificate of military service (Form 830), national civic service certificate or exemption from service. You can request a certificate from the IDF online (Chrome)

- After making sure you’ve attached all the required documents, submit the application
- Keep your application number. You’ll need it to continue the process and get information
- Within 6 working days, you’ll get a confirmation text
- After your application has been processed, including contacting your referees, you’ll get a text to book an interview at a licensing office
- After passing the interview, your eligibility for conditional approval will be examined
- Pay the licensing fee online or at a post office - currently ILS 60 per year or part of the year - in accordance with the fee regulation

- After paying the licensing fee go for training at a licensed shooting range
You’ll need to train with a firearm that is identical to the one you want to buy.
Bring:- the payment confirmation
- a copy of your health declaration
- the conditional approval
- Buy a firearm from:
- a licensed dealer – the licensed dealer will sell you the firearm and ammunition, transfer ownership, and provide you with of a paper license
- a private individual - you can transfer ownership of the firearm and ammunition online and get a paper license by email. You can also book an appointment to transfer ownership of the firearm and ammunition at a licensing office and get the paper license there
- You can take shortened training if:
- you’ve completed training as part of service with a security body
- you’ve passed training at a licensed shooting range in the last 3 years, and your training has been reported to the Firearms Licensing Division. If it wasn’t reported, contact the shooting range for a reference
- Submit confirmation of your training to the service center
After completing training, you’ll be sent a magnetic license to your updated address in the division within 90 days of the transfer of ownership
The training lasts 4.5 hours and includes:
- theoretical training and a test. The passing grade is 70
- practical training - shooting training of 80 bullets, followed by a certification test with 20 bullets. The passing grade is 70
If you don’t pass you can take more training.
The theory test grade is valid for 3 months.
You need to pass the theory test to continue to the practical training.
Shortened training
At your interview at the licensing office, you can ask for shortened training if:
- you present confirmation of previous knowledge and training during service in a security body
- you completed training at a licensed shooting range in the last 3 years, and your training has been reported to the Firearms Licensing Division. If it wasn’t reported, contact the shooting range for a reference
Shortened training is 2 hours, and includes:
- theoretical training and a test. The passing grade is 70
- practical training - shooting training of 20 bullets, followed by a certification test with 10 bullets. The passing grade is 70
Notes
- If you fail the shortened training you’ll need to complete the regular training, you’ll have to complete the regular training (or less, so long as you meet the requirements and pass the tests)
- In the second year of your license validity, you must take a refresher course. You’ll get a reminder by post and email at the beginning of the second year.
