Give up (renounce) Israeli citizenship – for Israelis living abroad
Israeli citizens living abroad can apply to give up (renounce) their Israeli citizenship. You must apply in person at a Population and Immigration Authority office or Israeli mission.
Who can give up Israeli citizenship
You can give up your Israeli citizenship and your children's Israeli citizenship if you are over 18 and:
- you already have another citizenship or nationality
- or you’re going to get another citizenship or nationality after giving up your Israeli citizenship
You'll need:
- your Israeli ID or passport
- a letter of explanation
- evidence that you are:
- a citizen of another country or you’re going to get foreign citizenship after giving up your Israeli citizenship
- a resident of another country
- Israeli citizens aged 16-35 – proof concerning responsibility to IDF
Giving up your child's Israeli citizenship
Your children will automatically be included in the application if:
- they're under 18
- and both parents are giving up their citizenship
If only one parent is giving up citizenship both parents must grant consent to give up their child's citizenship.
If you're divorced you'll need one of the following:
- consent from your child's other parent given:
- in person at any authority office before or during the application
- or by letter of consent, witnessed and signed in the presence of an lawyer
- a court order granting you sole custody
- a court approved marriage agreement granting you sole custody
- a court order permitting you to give up your child's citizenship without the other parent's consent
You must submit original documents.

NIS 385 per applicant

How to apply
- Print the Application to renounce Israeli citizenship and fill out the details in handwriting.
- After completing the form, you must arrive in person with the necessary documents, in the Israeli mission which is near your place of residence abroad.
If the circumstances justify such – the declaration may be received in one of the Population Administration offices in Israel, subject to pre - approval of the Citizenship Division in PIBA head offices, after considering a detailed application setting out justified circumstances.
Anyone over 16 included in the application must apply in person.
