Report a road traffic accident to the police online
If you’ve been in a road traffic accident, you can report it online. You need to be registered to GovID.
What type of accidents can you report
You can only report accidents that resulted in damage to property or non-serious harm to someone involved.
You can report:
- front to rear collisions
- collisions with parked vehicles
- collisions with inanimate objects
- harm to a passenger, for example, someone fell over on a bus
Who can report an accident
- Any driver or passenger who was involved can report an accident
- New drivers can report accidents online only if no-one was harmed, and the driver is over 18
What you need to attach
Attach:
- your ID
- your driver's license that was valid on the day of the accident
- the vehicle license that was valid on the day of the accident
- compulsory vehicle insurance valid for the day of the accident. You don’t need to attach comprehensive and third party insurance
- relevant medical certificates (if necessary)

How to report an accident
You need to be registered to GovID before you can report an accident online
- Enter the accident report form via GovID - after entering your username and password you’ll get a one time code to log in
- Follow the instructions on the accident report form
- Attach the required documents and photos:
- don't throw away original photos
- you can attach the following file formats: jpg, jpeg, gif, png, tif, tiff, bmp, pdf
- files cannot be more than 8MB

Please note: You’ll need to enter any information you have about the vehicle and people involved in the accident, including vehicle insurance details, names, telephone numbers and details of witnesses to the accident.
What happens next
After submitting the report, the information will be used to investigate the accident.
It may be necessary to summon anyone involved, to investigate the accident.
