Apply to the National Board on Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis of Gender During IVF
Apply to choose the sex of your child for medical reasons through pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. Find out how to apply, and what are the conditions and application process.
Today it’s possible to choose the sex of your child through pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and in in vitro fertilization. Selection of the embryo's sex for a non-medical purpose is prohibited.
- The board reviews requests for gender selection and decides whether to accept or reject such requests.
- Gender selection is allowed in exceptional cases, and with a written approval in advance from the board.
The board can only approve your application if you meet all the following conditions:
- there is a risk of serious harm to the mental health of you or your spouse, or to your unborn child, if their sex cannot be determined in advance
- you have at least 4 children of the same sex, and no children of the other sex, except in very exceptional and rare cases and for special reasons (to be recorded in the board's decision)
- you have received genetic counseling and clarifications including:
- the details of the procedure and advice from a fertility doctor on the chances and risks
- the ethical considerations involved in selecting the sex of your unborn child, including what happens to unselected embryos
- you must give your written informed consent to perform the procedure and a separate informed consent to perform the IVF process
- you have been told that if the created embryos are not of the chosen sex, no further fertilization cycle will be approved for sex selection, before all the embryos generated are used
- The board will only grant your application if it is convinced that there is enough justification for choosing the sex of your child.
- The board will review your application. If you meet the conditions the board will ask you to provide more documents.
- They board will notify you where to get the psychological evaluation and the the evaluation institute in the letter.
- After you have submitted all the required documents and psychological evaluation, the board will review your application.
- You will get the board’s decision in an offical letter.
- If your application is denied, and there are new circumstances that you wish to present, you can apply in writing to appear before the board.
- If your application is approved, you will be able to proceed with the procedure independently.
The board will consider:
- whether in vitro fertilization procedure is required for medical reasons and not only for the purpose of selecting the sex of the newborn
- the degree of risk and burden to the mother of the IVF procedure, if not medically necessary and done only for the purpose of selecting the sex of the newborn
- whether the pre-implantation genetic diagnosis process is required for medical reasons and not only for the purpose of selecting the sex of the newborn
