HIV Testing
You can get tested for HIV for free at your HMO (kupat holim), and at clinics and labs accredited by the Ministry of Health. Testing is conducted with full medical confidentiality, as required. See the list of testing centers, and find out more about getting tested for HIV.
Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which affects the body’s immune system.
Someone infected with HIV is known as a carrier.
Immediately after exposure, the virus is present in the blood at such a low level it can’t be diagnosed. This is known as the window period.
A test can detect HIV in the blood about 3 weeks after exposure. To rule out infection completely, the test needs to be repeated 12 weeks after exposure.

These centers allow HIV testing in two possible ways, but in any case, people tested are required to provide identifying information when the sample is collected. These details are used for the purpose of testing at the clinic.
The two tracks:
- For people tested who agree to their test results being sent to their HMO, the service will be provided free of cost and funded by the HMO.
- For people tested who want the discrete track in which negative results will not be sent to their HMO, the service will be provided at cost with no reimbursement from the HMO or the state. In the event that the result is positive, the individuals will be asked to repeat the test. It is important to note that according to the law, every positive result will be delivered confidentially to the Ministry of Health.
