Water, Wastewater, Streams and Rivers Department

The Water, Wastewater, Streams and Rivers Department is in charge of implementing the laws that instruct to protect the water resources in Israel and avoiding pollution. 
The department leads activities for the reduction and prevention of polluting ware sources, rehabilitating streams, treating urban swamps and reusing them as agricultural fertilizer and an energy source, treating invasive species, with emphasis on humid husbandry facilities, etc. 
Main responsibilities and activities of the department:

• Sewage transmission system – transitioning from managing malfunctions to a preventative approach and to improving the maintenance. Supervision and control of the sewage transmission systems in the water and sewage corporations and in local authorities in order to reduce the pollution of water sources.
• Sewage treatment – control, supervision, promoting and improving the ability to treat the sewage treatment plants, until the plants reach a level that enables that use of wastewater for irrigation, as a main water resource for agriculture, by protecting the environment and the public health.
• Participation in determining water policy – participating in inter-ministerial committees to promote the implementation of the sewage treatment policy.
• Rehabilitation of rivers and streams – rehabilitating rivers and streams and reflowing the water into them from natural sources and turning them into sites for public welfare.
  • Planning the rehabilitation of rivers and streams, including removing pollutants, ecological rehabilitation, securing water sources and developing centers for public welfare. The plan is outlined in a basin and holistic view in order to maximize their benefits.
  • Participating in discussions of inter-ministerial committees to test and judge the river drainage plans and participating in the Drainage Council.
• Invasive species – preventing the spreading and treatment for the sake of eradicating invasive species.
• Providing hydrological and geohydrological expert opinions regarding water polluters.
