Implementation of Manufacturer's Warranty Laws Department - Waste
About
One of the fundamental principles on which environmental protection laws in Israel and around the world have been based since 2011 is that manufacturers and importers are responsible for the environmental consequences of their activity, known as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
The Producer Responsibility Laws Department works to implement legislation in the area of extended producer responsibility, by requiring producers and manufacturers to internalize damages derived from the use of their products. According to the principle of extended producer responsibility, the negative environmental cost and the cost of treating this waste (collection, sorting, recycling) are embodied in the price of the product.
The Producer Responsibility Laws Department is involved with the implementation of five laws:
- Law to Regulate Packaging Treatment
- Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Batteries Law
- Beverage Container Deposit Law
- Tire Disposal and Recyling Law
- Plastic Bag Law (This law is not part of the EPR system.)
The departement's activities include:
- Enforcement activities with manufacturers and importers, sellers, and local authorities to meet the recycling targets of waste packaging and electronic waste.
- Raising awareness about the Plastic Bag Law and conducting enforcement activities vis-à-vis large supermarkets
- Handling inquiries regarding electric and electronic waste removal, as well as about contractual agreements between different stakeholders
- Reviewing applications from entities wishing to receive accreditation to treat packaging and electronic waste
