Police unit 105
About
The 105 police unit is an operational unit that is tasked with investigating online crimes against minors and enforcing the law in cyberspace. The unit is part of Lahav 433 which handles serious crimes on a national and international level.
The 105 unit uses many means of enforcement, both technological and other, to investigate, expose, and bring criminals operating in cyberspace to justice. At the same time, the unit uses alternate enforcement means to reduce prohibited online activity. The unit cooperates with international law enforcement and policing agencies to confront the global nature of cybercrime.
The unit is staffed by skilled professionals specializing in law enforcement in the field of cybercrime. They are joined by education, healthcare, and welfare professionals.
Criminal Law Enforcement
Criminal law enforcement is done to enable the investigation and exposure of a person who has committed a criminal act. This encompasses classical enforcement methods, such as intelligence and source gathering, interrogation of witnesses and suspects, monitoring the internet, and finally making a recommendation to the State Attorney’s office to indict the suspect and try them.
The unit investigates sex crimes, violations of the law that came to be known as the "Videos Law" (the 10 amendment to the law on preventing sexual harassment), and crimes of violence in which the victim is a minor.
Alternate Enforcement
In tandem with classical law enforcement tactics, the unit also applies alternate enforcement tactics permitted by law and designed to prevent crime and reduce the harm crime inflicts. Such tactics include a broad range of activities, such as:
- Block access to abusive/offensive websites and to certain abusive/offensive contents;
- Filter certain contents from search engines’ search results;
- Remove abusive/offensive contents from website, social media, etc.
Most alternate forms of law enforcement are effected by the state contacting the internet service providers when there is reason for filtering, removal, banning, or disconnection because of violations of the ISP’s own terms of use.
In certain cases, enforcement takes place after a court order has been obtained that obligates the ISP to cooperate. This course of action is done in close cooperation with Ministry of Justice, a partner of the Bureau.
