District Office - Haifa
About
The Haifa District includes a seaport, an airport, power stations, oil refineries, and a system of chemical and petrochemical plants that rely on proximity to the port and to the refineries for the purpose of obtaining raw materials. The area has a very large concentration of hazardous materials. Thus, Haifa Bay presents a national challenge when it comes to addressing a myriad of environmental issues. This includes tremendous air pollution, a result of the extensive industrial activities in the area and the microclimate conditions prevailing there, which do not allow sufficient dispersion of pollutants. The district lies between Hadera in the south, the Wadi Ara area in the east, and Tzur Shalom in the north.
A national action plan for the Haifa Bay region, being implemented by the Ministries of Environmental Protection, Finance, Health, and Transport, is expected to significantly reduce industrial air pollution in Haifa Bay.
The challenge for the future is to continually improve the environment, as well as health of Haifa Bay area residents, by improving air quality, reducing odor hazards, and reducing the risk of proximity to hazardous materials.
