Chief Scientist

The Chief Scientist is the Ministry’s highest authority on scientific matters and serves as Chair of the Ministry’s Applied Research Foundation. Appointed as a professional position, the Chief Scientist advises the Minister and the Ministry’s leadership on scientific issues and, in coordination with the Director General, develops and implements the Ministry’s short- and long-term scientific policy.
The Chief Scientist prepares the budgetary framework for developing Israel’s scientific and technological infrastructure to create critical mass in priority fields. On behalf of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, the Chief Scientist coordinates the Chief Scientists’ Forum for all government ministries.

The Chief Scientist builds and maintains scientific relationships with Israeli and international institutions, represents the Ministry in bilateral and multilateral forums on international scientific cooperation, and oversees the scientific follow-up of regional research and development centers supported by the Ministry. The Chief Scientist also provides scientific counsel for special government projects.
Annually, the Chief Scientist recommends national priority fields for Ministry support, in consultation with internal and external professionals. The Chief Scientist leads a large team of scientific managers and is assisted by a Deputy Chief Scientist.
