The list’s letter

Each list of candidates in Knesset elections chooses one or more Hebrew letters as its symbol. Each list of candidates has a different letter or letters and its own separate name. Existing parliamentary groups have precedence over new parliamentary groups in the selection of letters or in retaining the letter already identified with them. It is forbidden to choose letters which may cause confusion or which resemble the letters of an existing parliamentary group.

What is a parliamentary group?

As soon as a list succeeds in entering the Knesset, it becomes a parliamentary group, although the party or parties comprising it continue to exist as parties outside of it.

Pursuant to the Parties Financing Law the Knesset Committee may, after the elections:
• Recognize a new parliamentary group that has split from an existing parliamentary group.
• Recognize a new parliamentary group consisting of Knesset Members who were members of other parliamentary groups.
• Recognize a new parliamentary group that was created as the result of the union of existing parliamentary groups.

What is a Party?

A party is a group of people who have joined together for the purpose of achieving political or social objectives in a lawful manner and bringing about their representation in the Knesset by means of elected representatives. The party represents a part of society as a whole and its values and principles are expressed in its ideology, as stated in the party platform.

Parties are a key element in the realization of democracy in the State, since they make it possible for citizens to connect to their representative body according to their political opinions and assure their representation in the Knesset.
