| What is a party? |
A party is a group of people who have joined together for the purpose of achieving political or social objectives in a lawful manner and bringing about their representation in the Knesset by means of elected representatives. The party represents a part of society as a whole and its values and principles are expressed in its ideology, as stated in the party platform.
Parties are a key part of the implementation of democracy in the country, enabling citizens to be connected with a body that represents them according to their political views and takes care of their representation in the Knesset. |

| Disqualifying a party from registration |
The Party Registrar decides whether to accept or refuse the application to register a new party. Grounds for disqualifying a party are if that party’s objectives, whether implicitly or explicitly: • Denounce the existence of the State of Israel as a democratic Jewish State. • Incite racism. • Incite support for the armed struggle of an enemy state or a terrorist organization. • The Party Registrar may also disqualify registration of a party if there is a reasonable fear that its activities may serve as a cover for any illegal activity. |

| Registering in the Parties Register |
Any party wishing to participate in the elections must register in the Parties Register. 100 or more citizens of the State of Israel may register as a party.
The requisite procedural actions are: • Election of a party leader. •The party leader submits an application to the Party Registrar. The application includes the party’s name and objectives, as well as a list of all founding members together with their identifying details. • The application is submitted in 60 copies and includes the party regulations (in five copies). • The cost of registration is NIS 1,807. • Registered parties must issue confirmation of payment for publicizing the existence of the new party, which is in the region of NIS 70,000. Such publication enables citizens to submit any objection to registration of the party. |
