| The Council for Higher Education |
The council for higher education in Israel operates a joint steering committee dedicated to foreign students. The committee, headed by a member of the Planning and budgeting committee, includes the universities and the Jewish Agency. The committee’s budget comes from the Jewish Agency.
The committee’s functions are as follows: 1. Determining policies for the operation of programs aimed at increasing the number of Jewish students from abroad (mostly from American and Western Europe) in institutes of higher education in Israel. 2. Allocation of funds for activities aimed at achieving this purpose.
Activities include:
Assignment of scholarships to B.A. and special program students as well as to advanced degree students.
Recruitment of students from abroad to institutes of higher education in Israel by means of cooperation with Jewish student organizations. Most of this activity has focused on North America, although in the past few years efforts were also directed at recruitment of students from Latin America, South Africa and Europe. Students from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe are not included within this framework.
Academic development - support of an increase in the number of courses offered to foreign students, in the institutes of higher learning in order to make those courses better suited to foreign students. This support is usually short term.
Social and cultural activities – support of activities allowing students to get to know the country, its society and culture. |
