Last Modified at:16-Feb-2011
Tel Aviv-Yafo Marks Its 100th Anniversary The centennial celebrations, planned to begin in early April, will include outdoor festivals, art shows, sporting events, historic exhibitions and numerous community projects.

The date chosen for the celebrations' kick-off marks the date of the city's founding 100 years ago, on April 11, 1909, when several dozen families gathered on the sand dunes on the beach outside Jaffa to allocate plots of land for a new neighborhood they called "Ahuzat Bayit", later known as Tel Aviv. Throughout the decades, the city has flourished to become Israel’s business and cultural center, also bringing about a boon in Bauhaus-style architecture, which was recognized in 2003 as a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The centennial events open with a gala celebration in Rabin Square on April 4th, featuring a 360° rotating sound and light show, a concert by the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by maestro Zubin Mehta, and performances by prominent vocalists and actors.

Events are expected to take place through 2009 and will include among others:
The International Tel-Aviv Marathon (24 April)
The annual White Night celebration (27 May)
The International RS:X Class European Windsurfing Championship, (10-20 June)
The Blue Festival in Jaffa's recently renovated port (17-18 June), celebrating Mediterranean culture, music and food,
Free, open-air performance in Yarkon Park of Verdi’s Requiem by the prestigious La Scala Opera House (16 July)
Free musical happenings include the Saturday night jazz and classical music concerts in the Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center piazza (July and August).
A city-wide Teen festival (August) that will include pop concerts, sports activities, dance parties and other festivities.

The Green Festival (17 October), dedicating of the Green Route along the Yarkon River and a centennial bike ride.
Fashion Week in Tel Aviv Port (19-22 October).

In preparation for the centennial celebrations, the city has also embarked on 15 major renovation projects highlighting many of Tel Aviv-Yafo’s gems. Among the projects: The Yafo port is being rebuilt, with a new large park added to its south; the Templar neighborhood of Sarona is being renovated and will become a new culture and entertainment area, as will the newly restored Manshia train station on the edge of Yafo; the beachfront promenade is being extended; the Trumpeldor Street cemetery, burial site of many city founders has been restored; New wings are being added to the Cinemateque and Tel Aviv Museum of Art; and the Habima National Theater is undergoing massive renovations.

The Centennial anniversary of Tel-Aviv Yafo will also be celebrated in cities around the world, with creations of Tel Aviv beaches in Central Park, New-York, along the banks of the Seine in Paris, the Danube in Vienna and Copenhagen's canals.
