| Israel Decides on "Green Government" |
| Last Modified at:20-Dec-2009 |
The government intends to improve ministries efficiency on environmental and other aspects, both in quantitative and qualitative methods.
The decision to implement green policies throughout the government ministries follows a proposal by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. Among others the decision calls for:
Setting quantitative, measurable targets for the reduction of electricity, water and paper consumption by government ministries.
Reducing the amount of waste produced
Increasing use of products made from recycled materials.
Committing to switch to energy efficient, low pollution transport.
Requiring internal auditors of government ministries to present performance reports to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, which will compile the data and present annual reports to the government and to the public.
The Government Vehicles Administration will take part in the new effort and will conduct fuel-efficient driving courses that should help reducing air pollution of government vehicles by up to 15%.
The government ministries are required to establish "green teams" to oversee the implementation of the new program, although, at first, no actions will be taken against ministries which will not meet the new standards.
