| Guide to the 2009 Elections |
| Last Modified at:17-Dec-2008 |
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes a brief guide for the upcoming elections, to be held on February 10th 2009, including the legal background and explanations on the expected timetable up till the 18th Knesset first session.
The date for the 2009 elections was determined following the call for general elections by President Peres last October. On December 24th 2008 the running parties are expected to submit their lists of candidates to the Central Elections Committee, and by doing so initiate the elections process. The guide published at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website provides links to a full translation of the Knesset Basic Law, detailing the elections process and the timetable derived from it.
The guide also offers a short historical overview of the evolution of the law, including the direct election amendment that was added in 1996 and abolished in 2001, as well as the various criteria and restrictions for voting in the elections on the actual Election Day, and for running as a candidate. A more detailed overview can be found at the "Elections and state" section of the Knesset website.
For those interested in the day after the elections, information is also available about the publication of the official election results and about the process of forming the next government, presenting it to the newly elected Knesset and getting the Knesset Members' Approval.
The new guide is part of the "Historic Events" section at the Ministry's website, where you can also read about previous election campaigns, review list of candidates for past Knesset sessions, and check the official results of past elections.
